No. Maple Grove Elementary at 3085 Alkire Street in Golden stayed open through Jeffco’s 2022 consolidation round and instead took in the Vivian Elementary center program. As of early November 2026, neither the district nor the school has announced a closure or merger for Maple Grove.
School closures are one of the first things buyers ask about in Applewood West, and for good reason. Jefferson County Public Schools voted in 2022 to close 16 elementary schools, most of them at the end of the 2022-23 school year and several within a few miles of Alkire Street, Braun Road and West 24th Place. When a neighborhood’s elementary school is on a list like that, it changes daily routines, commutes and how a home is described for sale.
Maple Grove was not on that list. It is the neighborhood elementary school the district’s own lookup returns for the Applewood West addresses we have checked, and School Finder put it about a quarter to half a mile from those homes. But “not closed in 2022” is not the same as “never affected,” so this post walks through what actually changed at Maple Grove, what the district has said since, and how to keep track of it.

Was Maple Grove Elementary closed in the Jeffco consolidations?
No. Jeffco’s Board of Education voted unanimously on November 10, 2022 to close 16 elementary schools, most of them effective with the 2023-24 school year. Denver7’s report on the vote listed each closing school and the school it would merge into. Three were in the Wheat Ridge articulation area, the group of schools that includes Maple Grove:
| Closing school | Students moved to | Center program moved to |
|---|---|---|
| Vivian Elementary | Stober Elementary | Maple Grove Elementary |
| Wilmore-Davis Elementary | Stevens Elementary | Not listed |
| Kullerstrand Elementary | Prospect Valley Elementary | Not listed |

Jeffco’s Phase I consolidation page explains how schools were chosen. The district looked at schools with fewer than 220 students in K-5 or K-6 grades, or using 45 percent or less of their building’s capacity, and required a nearby elementary school within 3.5 miles that could take the students. Maple Grove was not one of the schools that closed.
What changed at Maple Grove after Vivian closed?
The one direct effect was a program move. Vivian Elementary’s center program was relocated to Maple Grove as part of the 2023-24 changes, while Vivian’s neighborhood students went to Stober Elementary in Lakewood. We covered the Stober side of that change in our post on whether Stober’s boundary changed when Vivian closed.
Center programs are specialized special education classrooms housed inside regular neighborhood schools. Jeffco’s special education pages say placement in a center program is set by a student’s IEP team, not by home address, and families cannot enroll in one on their own. That means hosting a center program does not change which homes are assigned to Maple Grove as their neighborhood school. Maple Grove’s own special education page currently lists a Deaf and Hard of Hearing program classroom.
Everything else that defines the school for a homeowner stayed the same: the address at 3085 Alkire Street, its place in the Wheat Ridge articulation area, and its feeder path to Everitt Middle School and Wheat Ridge High School.
Which schools serve Applewood West today?
When we ran three Applewood West addresses through Jeffco’s School Finder in October 2026, all three returned the same neighborhood schools:
- Maple Grove Elementary, preschool to 5th grade, 3085 Alkire St, Golden
- Everitt Middle School, 6th to 8th grade, 3900 Kipling St, Wheat Ridge
- Wheat Ridge High School and Golden High School, both listed as neighborhood high schools
The two-high-school result surprises a lot of buyers. Our post on whether Applewood West goes to Golden or Wheat Ridge High School explains what the district lookup shows and how enrollment works when two high schools appear. Maple Grove’s own articulation area page lists it alongside Prospect Valley, Stevens and Stober elementaries, Everitt Middle and Wheat Ridge High.
Is Jeffco planning more school closures?
The district has not published a new elementary closure list since the 2022 round. Since then, its planning has focused on secondary schools. The Neighborhood Gazette reported in May 2025 that Jeffco delayed a planned 2026-27 closure of Jefferson Junior/Senior High School in Edgewater by one to two years, citing low enrollment, and that Wheat Ridge High School had room for many Jefferson students if a closure happens. The same report said the district had closed 21 schools in recent years and that enrollment had been declining for about two decades.
School funding is also on the table this fall. Jeffco voters decided on November 3, 2026 on ballot issues 5A and 5B, which would add $73 million and $60 million a year in school property taxes starting in 2027. Results were not final when this was written. Our post on what Jeffco 5A and 5B would cost an Applewood homeowner explains both measures. Neither measure is a school closure plan, and the district has not tied either one to a specific school.
In short: nothing announced today points at Maple Grove, but Jeffco’s enrollment trend is the reason closures happened before, and the district reviews its facilities regularly.
What does this mean for buying or selling in Applewood West?
For buyers, the practical steps are simple. Run the exact address through Jeffco’s School Finder, save a screenshot with the date, and check the district’s enrollment calendar. For the 2027-28 school year, EnrollJeffco Round 1 opens December 1, 2026 and closes January 15, 2027. If a specific school matters to a purchase, ask the district’s enrollment office about that address before writing an offer.
For sellers, describe the schools accurately and by name. A listing that says “Maple Grove Elementary, Everitt Middle, Wheat Ridge or Golden High per Jeffco School Finder” is clearer than a single high school in a dropdown field, and it heads off questions later. Avoid repeating older information from before the 2023-24 changes.
