Does Applewood West Go to Golden High School or Wheat Ridge High School?

Brick ranch home with a two-car garage, front lawn and tall evergreen trees

Both. Jefferson County Public Schools’ School Finder lists Golden High School and Wheat Ridge High School as neighborhood high schools for the Applewood West addresses we checked, along with Maple Grove Elementary and Everitt Middle School in Wheat Ridge.

Applewood West is the unincorporated Jefferson County neighborhood around Alkire Street, Braun Road and West 24th Place, south of West 32nd Avenue and west of Youngfield Street. Homes there carry a Golden mailing address, but the area is not part of the City of Golden, and its schools do not follow the mailing address the way many buyers expect.

That is where the confusion starts. A listing might show Golden High School in one place and Wheat Ridge High School in another, and neighbors often give different answers depending on where their own students went. Older guides and some real estate sites describe Applewood as split between the two, without saying which streets go where.

Jason Sirois, a Denver Realtor with FORM at Compass and an Applewood resident, gets this question from buyers touring homes west of Youngfield. We ran Applewood West addresses through the district’s own lookup on October 9, 2026. Here is what came back, how Jeffco’s school system is organized, and how to confirm the answer for a specific house.

What does Jeffco’s School Finder show for Applewood West?

Jeffco Public Schools assigns neighborhood schools by address, and the district points families to its School Finder to look them up. We entered three Applewood West addresses: one on Alkire Court, one on Braun Road and one on West 24th Place. All three returned the same set of schools marked “Your Neighborhood School.”

School Grades Address School Finder label Distance from the addresses checked
Maple Grove Elementary Preschool to 5th 3085 Alkire St, Golden Your Neighborhood School 0.27 to 0.57 miles
Everitt Middle School 6th to 8th 3900 Kipling St, Wheat Ridge Your Neighborhood School 2.18 to 2.8 miles
Wheat Ridge High School 9th to 12th 9505 W 32nd Ave, Wheat Ridge Your Neighborhood School 2.31 to 2.79 miles
Golden High School 9th to 12th 701 24th St, Golden Your Neighborhood School 3.12 to 3.69 miles
Manning School of Academics and Arts 6th to 8th 13200 W 32nd Ave, Golden Option School 0.27 to 0.57 miles

So the short answer to “Golden or Wheat Ridge?” is that the district lists both high schools as neighborhood schools for these addresses. The elementary and middle school do not split the same way: School Finder named one of each, Maple Grove and Everitt.

How Jeffco’s articulation areas fit together

Jeffco organizes its schools into 17 articulation areas, each built around a high school and the elementary and middle schools that lead to it. The district’s Wheat Ridge Articulation Area page lists Maple Grove Elementary alongside Prospect Valley, Stevens and Stober elementaries, Everitt Middle School and Wheat Ridge High School.

The Golden Articulation Area lists a different set: Kyffin, Mitchell, Ralston, Shelton and Welchester elementaries, Bell Middle School and Golden High School. Maple Grove and Everitt are not on that list, which is why some buyers are surprised to see Golden High come up at all.

The district’s articulation pages do not explain why Applewood West addresses show two neighborhood high schools, and we have not found a district document that does. What we can say is what the district’s own lookup returns today. Wikipedia’s entry on Applewood describes the broader area the same way, noting that most of it is zoned to either Golden High or Wheat Ridge High, while some parts are zoned to only one.

Why listings and neighbors give different answers

There are a few reasons the answer gets muddled in Applewood West:

  • The mailing address says Golden. A Golden ZIP code makes Golden High School feel like the obvious answer, but school assignment in Jeffco follows district boundaries, not post office boundaries.
  • Listing fields hold one school. A listing’s high school field may show only one of the two, depending on what the listing agent entered.
  • Nearby neighborhoods differ. Applewood is a large unincorporated area, and the schools change from one subdivision to the next. Applewood Knolls, for example, is covered in our post on Kullerstrand Elementary and Applewood Knolls schools.
  • Schools have changed. Jeffco’s board voted in November 2022 to close 16 elementary schools, effective with the 2023-24 school year, and several Applewood-area schools were part of that. Information from before then can be out of date.

For any one house, the district lookup is the record to rely on, not the listing and not a neighbor’s experience from a few years ago.

How enrollment works when two high schools show up

Jeffco’s enrollment page says families can enroll in their designated neighborhood school or apply to other schools through EnrollJeffco, with up to three school applications per student. For the 2027-28 school year, the district lists these Round 1 dates:

  • Round 1 opens December 1, 2026
  • Round 1 closes January 15, 2027
  • Round 1 results posted January 26, 2027

The enrollment page does not spell out how a student with two listed neighborhood high schools chooses between them, or whether a seat is held at both. If that matters to a purchase decision, call Jeffco’s enrollment office with the specific address before you write an offer, and ask how a student at that address enrolls at each school.

Manning School of Academics and Arts, about a quarter to half a mile from the addresses we checked, is an option school for grades 6 to 8. Option schools are applied to rather than assigned by address, so Manning is not a neighborhood school for Applewood West even though it is the closest middle school.

What this means when buying or selling in Applewood West

For buyers, the practical step is simple: run the exact address through School Finder, save a screenshot with the date, and confirm with the district if the answer matters to you. Boundaries are set by the district and can change, so treat any school information in a listing as a starting point rather than a guarantee.

For sellers, accuracy protects you. If your listing names a high school, make sure it matches what School Finder shows for your address today. Where the district lists two, saying so plainly is more accurate than picking one, and it answers a question buyers in Applewood West tend to ask at the first showing.

School information is one piece of a larger picture in Applewood West, along with lot sizes, the mix of original ranches and rebuilt homes, and the neighborhood’s unincorporated status. Our Applewood community page covers the wider area, and Jason is glad to walk through any address with you.
