No. Kullerstrand Elementary closed at the end of the 2022-23 school year, when Jeffco Public Schools consolidated it into Prospect Valley Elementary in Wheat Ridge. Current Applewood Knolls listings show Prospect Valley, Everitt Middle and Wheat Ridge High.
If you have been scrolling listings in Applewood Knolls, the 1960s neighborhood around West Applewood Knolls Drive, West 27th Drive and West 26th Avenue, you may have seen Kullerstrand Elementary named as the neighborhood school. Some older listing pages and third-party school sites still carry that name. The school has not held classes since the spring of 2023.
It is an easy mix-up to make. Applewood Knolls homes carry Lakewood 80215 mailing addresses, sit in unincorporated Jefferson County, and feed Wheat Ridge-area schools, so the paperwork already crosses three place names. Add a school that closed only a few years ago, and stale data hangs around on sites that do not refresh school assignments often.
Jason Sirois, a Realtor with FORM at Compass Denver and an Applewood resident, put together what changed, where Applewood Knolls addresses are assigned now, and how to confirm the school for a specific home before you write an offer or a listing.
What happened to Kullerstrand Elementary?
On November 10, 2022, the Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education voted to close 16 elementary schools across the district, citing declining enrollment. The district’s consolidation plan paired each closing school with a receiving school, effective for the 2023-24 school year. Three of those closures were in the Wheat Ridge and Applewood area:
| Closed elementary | Students moved to | Effective |
|---|---|---|
| Kullerstrand Elementary | Prospect Valley Elementary | 2023-24 school year |
| Vivian Elementary (New Classical Academy) | Stober Elementary | 2023-24 school year |
| Wilmore-Davis Elementary | Stevens Elementary | 2023-24 school year |

Kullerstrand’s last school year was 2022-23. Since then, the building and its fields have been part of a longer conversation about what happens to closed school sites, covered below.
Which schools serve Applewood Knolls now?
Current MLS listings for Applewood Knolls homes, such as a 1965 home on West 26th Avenue, show this assignment:
| Level | School shown on current listings |
|---|---|
| Elementary | Prospect Valley Elementary, 3400 Pierson St, Wheat Ridge |
| Middle | Everitt Middle School |
| High | Wheat Ridge High School |

All three schools are in Jeffco’s Wheat Ridge articulation area, which the district lists on its articulation areas page along with Maple Grove, Stevens, Stober and Peak Expeditionary elementaries. Boundaries follow streets, not subdivision names, so a home at the edge of the neighborhood can land differently. The district’s School Finder, linked from that page, is the record to rely on.
What is Prospect Valley Elementary?
Prospect Valley is the school Kullerstrand consolidated into, and its building is new. Jeffco replaced the original 1967 school with a two-story, roughly 60,000-square-foot building at 3400 Pierson Street, funded by the district’s 2018 bond. Mile High CRE reported a cost of about $20 million and a ribbon cutting in January 2023, designed by MOA Architecture and built by GH Phipps. Industry coverage during construction put capacity at about 500 students and noted room for future classrooms.
That timing matters for anyone reading older material. Some descriptions of “Prospect Valley” online refer to the 1967 building, which no longer serves students. The school that took in Kullerstrand’s students opened the same year the consolidation took effect.
We are not ranking or rating schools here. If school details matter to your decision, visit, call the school, and read the district’s own information rather than relying on a listing line or a third-party score.
What is happening to the old Kullerstrand school site?
When Jeffco closes a school, the building goes through a surplus process that can take a year or more, with public input. The Neighborhood Gazette reported in early 2025 that Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation was interested in keeping the Kullerstrand fields available to the community, and that state law gives the local municipality the first opportunity to acquire or lease a surplus school site.
The question is now tied to the November 3, 2026 ballot. Wheat Ridge’s proposed one-cent sales tax lists “preservation of community spaces at Wilmore-Davis and Kullerstrand elementary schools” among the projects it would fund. We explained that measure, without taking a side, in our post on the Wheat Ridge sales tax ballot question. The outcome will shape what the Kullerstrand fields look like over the next several years.
How to check school information before you buy or list in Applewood Knolls
A few practical steps keep stale school data out of your decision or your marketing:
- Use the district tool, not the listing. Enter the full address in Jeffco’s School Finder and save the result with your documents.
- Read the MLS remarks closely. If a listing or a syndication site still names Kullerstrand, the school fields have not been updated since 2023.
- Sellers, correct it at the source. If your home is on the market and a site shows Kullerstrand, ask your agent to update the MLS school fields. Most third-party sites pull from that record.
- Remember the address quirk. A Lakewood mailing address does not mean Lakewood city services or a Lakewood school assignment. Applewood Knolls is unincorporated Jefferson County.
